Mark Hovind (JobBait.com) on Brands, Tag Lines, and Getting It

Mark Hovind (JobBait.com) on Brands, Tag Lines, and Getting It About a week before I started The Branding Contest I was on a 2.5 hour call with Mark Hovind. The question became what is JibberJobber? What does it do for my client? Most of the call was centered around that. When you first go to JibberJobber.com, the only tag line you see is Career Toolset. That doesnt quite explain it, does it? Not good enough, anyway. Mark took me on a fascinating tour of leading network companies to see what brilliance they have come up with. You can see the companies in the Network category of this page (you have to scroll down just a bit). Im actually going to copy and paste it as Mark has it: Here are some free and/or inexpensive executive networking groups. Does anything stick out? Not for me either. In fact, as he categorizes the sites, he makes them more cliche (in my eyes). He does not differentiate any of the six figure executive service offerings, nor does he differentiate any of the general networking group. No big deal, they are lucky he even listed them, and its not his responsibility to brand them. If you dont brand yourself well, youll get categorized and grouped with others, competition or not. 6 ways to boost your productivity University of Manchester Careers Blog

6 ways to boost your productivity University of Manchester Careers Blog Written by Callum McAvan, Student Communications and Marketing Assistant at the Careers Service. When I started university I distinctly remember, amongst the flurry of nights out, new friends and arguably too many kebabs, one thing stood out as a challenge. That challenge was simply â€" how do I make the most of my time? That challenge isn’t exclusive to the first year of your studies. In fact, whether it’s your final year of your degree, the post-graduation job search, or anything else in and amongst, it’s in your best interest to be as productive as possible. After all, the more meaningful progress you can achieve now, the more time to relax later! With that being said here are a few helpful tips to up your productivity: Plan your day When it comes to productivity tools, there are few better than a to-do list. Writing out a simple list of the tasks ahead of you at the start of the day can do wonders to focus your mind. However, ensure that your list is comprised of realistic goals, as it’s the satisfaction gleaned from crossing off the tasks that will spur you on further. Nobody wants to finish a day feeling like they haven’t achieved their goals because they set themselves up for a fall. Start with a few goals for the day; you can always add more. Save the best till last With your goals for the day on paper, it’s easier than ever to prioritise, and prioritise you should. As tempting as it is to rest in your comfort zone and complete a couple of the easier tasks first, it’s seldom the best course of action. Instead, biting the bullet by going for that task you may otherwise procrastinate on for the rest of the day can boost your productivity tenfold. Firstly, you get that nasty task out of the way first. Great! Secondly, whichever tasks follow will seem like a breeze in comparison. Be clever about your commute Make use of spare moments Commuting is the bane of my life, but it’s also something you can make work for you. I am not saying that you need to be typing up a covering letter on the Magic Bus between Fallowfield and Uni, but being proactive during travel can really help you out later. One thing done on your train ride is one less thing you need to do when you get home. Silence is bliss Now, I know that you likely want to listen to your latest Spotify finds as much as possible â€" I do. You’ve probably convinced yourself that “music helps me work better” but the scientific evidence points to the contrary. Well, that’s assuming youre listening to music with lyrics (a fair assumption, I might add) which has been shown time and again to be a distracting force when completing tasks. Granted, there is a case to be made for music without lyrics helping with focus, so go for that instead, if you’re still feeling musically inclined. My recommendations would be anything by Claude Debussy or Nobuo Uematsu. Don’t phone it in Not a distraction in sight Picture this â€" you sit down to finish some work you really need to do but then a thought like “Do fish get thirsty?” pops into your head, and you simply must know! You couldn’t possibly move on with your day without an answer. This happens to me all the time; anything is more fun than the task at hand. If it sounds vaguely familiar to you, it may be an idea to keep your phone off and, importantly, in another room. Otherwise, it can be easy to feel the urge to turn it on, just to check Twitter for a moment. Of course, that moment lasts at least ten minutes and any progress made is stunted. Out of sight, out of mind. Start single-tasking Multi-tasking is often portrayed as something we should all strive towards. When it comes down to it, often splitting your attention between two or more jobs just doesn’t cut it. If you’re dividing your attention several different ways then none of your work will be up to your top standard. Focus on one matter at a time. Why the FMCG Industry Must Strive for STEM Talent

Why the FMCG Industry Must Strive for STEM Talent Sponsored article by Universum Link Humans. The Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry is undergoing rapid change as local competitors gain market share at the expense of multinational brands. This is true across many categories of FMCG, including food and beverage, household products, and beauty and personal care. On top of this, there are constant mergers and acquisitions taking place, further highlighting the need for detailed insights into what talent will be required to drive FMCG companies and their products forward. Innovation as a driver of employer choice differs significantly between countries. For example, in Austria 59 percent of STEM students who want a job in FMCG identify innovation as a key factor, while in Thailand, only one in four do so. For business students aiming for FMCG jobs, joining a company with an attractive or exciting line of products and services is key: 46 percent say it’s a priority, compared to 34 percent of business students heading for other industries. For STEM students aiming for FMCG careers, attractive products/ services and a reputation for innovation are the most important aspect of an employer’s image. Research from Universum consistently shows that students prioritize training and development opportunities as an influence on employer choice. Business and STEM students hoping for FMCG careers prioritize good references above other remuneration and advancement factors. Today Universum and Link Humans launched “No More Business as usual”, a brand new eBook focusing on the FMCG industry and its need to strive for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) talent. How can HR executives in the FMCG industry attract and develop a new generation of talented workers? Which particular issues will influence people’s choice of employer? And what tactics will work most effectively to retain younger, high-value individuals? This report will explore these ideas and more as we examine the attitudes and goals of students aiming for a career in FMCG. “Change is the new normal and no more so than in the FMCG space. I have the pleasure of introducing this collaboration between Universum and Link Humans aimed at talent leaders in this sector and beyond” Said Link Humans Founder and CEO, Jörgen Sundberg. He continued “this report highlights the issues FMCG employers are facing today and looks into the future, thus allowing you to plan your talent attraction initiatives to meet current challenges and future proof your overall strategy”. Employers must take a regional approach to recruiting and retention This study has found that Innovation as a driver of employer choice differs significantly between countries. For example, in Austria 59 percent of STEM students who want a job in FMCG identify innovation as a key factor, while in Thailand, only one in four do so. STEM students who want jobs in the FMCG industry seek a work environment that is both friendly, and creative/dynamic. They are much more likely to prioritize a friendly work environment compared to STEM students bound for other industries. Again, bear in mind that views about a creative and dynamic work environment vary greatly by region. In Japan, for example, just 21 percent of STEM students who want jobs in FMCG cite it as a priority, while 40 percent of those from China and 55 percent of those from the US prioritize it. Why is STEM talent so important? Given the disruptive changes in the industry â€" such as the rise of new delivery models, and consumer demand for greater transparency around social and environmental issues â€" FMCG companies should consider going outside their industry for inspiration. This will allow them to see how other companies have managed disruption, and observe how they position their new vision to future employees. For the consumer goods industry, it’s essential to hire talent that can contend with the fast pace of change and drive future innovation, and it’s possible these individuals are attracted to industries other than FMCG. “For business students aiming for FMCG jobs, joining a company with an attractive or exciting line of products and services is key: 46 percent say it’s a priority, compared to 34 percent of business students heading for other industries” said Universum CMO, Jonas Barck. He continued “this further backs the argument for hiring more STEM talent, as they will be the people that create the products and services that lure the best business talent to an organization”. Methodology Each year Universum surveys the professional expectations of one million career seekers from 55 countries, and publishes dozens of reports on the top issues affecting global talent and the companies that hire talent. In this report, part of our Future Talent Insights Series, we uncover what university students look for in future employers in the consumer goods industry. We also show how companies can translate these findings into actionable steps for HR, recruitment and C-level leadership. In this study we segmented our research into two cohorts: business students and students in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. To understand these two groups, we compare the attitudes and career goals of those who have indicated (from a possible three choices) a preference for a career in the consumer goods industry against those who say that the FMCG industry is not among their top choices.

How Your Workspace Affects Your Mental Health and Productivity -

How Your Workspace Affects Your Mental Health and Productivity - No matter how much you enjoy your job, the workplace is entirely intended to elicit the maximum productivity from its employees. Managers and supervisors should, of course, genuinely care about the wellbeing of their staff, but for the majority of companies, the priority is to operate a thriving business. Intelligent entrepreneurs will know that the former often gives rise to the latter. The environment you work in has a significant impact on this. Decor choices have the power to inspire. Furnishings can be organized to encourage collaboration. Even lighting can affect employees’ state of mind. However, it is equally true that the workplace can cause stress, and an oppressive atmosphere can hamper productivity. It is in the best interests of us all to take a look at how elements of the workplace can affect us, both positively and negatively. We should examine how our mental health is served by the environments in which we spend a significant portion of our lives. By seeking to understand our offices a little better, we can make choices that affect both our individual happiness and overall productivity. Design Choices The stereotypical office is populated by sterile, dull design choices. It’s uninspiring, impersonal, and those common open-plan layouts put additional pressure on workers by giving the impression that their boss is always watching. A 2013 study by the Journal of Environmental Psychology revealed that this kind of impersonal design with a perceived lack of privacy can lead to emotional exhaustion and burnout. One approach that can be effective is the adoption of resimercial workspaces. By blending a more comfortable and flexible atmosphere with elements of a professional office environment, companies can help provide positive and stimulating surroundings. That said, it’s certainly a challenging undertaking, requiring careful thought to obtain the correct balance. Yes, the furniture needs to be comfortable, but this should be offset by arranging a layout that encourages productivity too. Color is also an important consideration when transforming the workplace. Psychologists have long maintained that color has the ability to affect mood, and inspire certain behaviors. Blue is often associated with intellect and ideas. When painting walls, or choosing furniture, business owners should be aware of the response they wish to elicit, and how color can be used in certain spaces. Organization Completing required tasks effectively is so much easier when our minds are free to focus on the problem at hand. A disorganized office environment not only serves as an unnecessary distraction but can also negatively affect mood and morale. This is why many large companies dedicate a proportion of their budget to optimizing workspaces; they understand just how impactful organization can be to productivity and employee satisfaction. Management should seek to gain employee input into how office organization can be improved. After all, they have daily insight into what aspects of their job can be improved by adopting streamlined measures or even eliminating unnecessary product and paperwork. Many companies are also making efforts to become entirely paperless; swapping unsightly, chaotic physical files for cloud storage and sharing. Research has shown that younger, smaller companies have been more receptive to overhauling organizational features of their companies. When approaching management to make changes, employees or older, larger companies can benefit from preparing research about what methods of improved organization have produced positive results in their industry. It can also be useful to accept responsibility for the changes, offering to put in the additional work to ensure the best chance of success. Remote Work It is not always practical for companies to make changes to the work environment in a way that suits individual employees. While it’s advisable to make practical adaptations in a way that affects the majority of staff, there are options to account for personal preferences. With this in mind, it is now more feasible than ever before to offer employees the opportunity to work from home. This needn’t be a full-time solution, but adopting remote working a couple of days a week can provide some variety to the work schedule. This also allows workers to create their own office environment, leaning into the surroundings and atmosphere they find most beneficial to their individual mental health and productivity. This has also been known to improve employee satisfaction, leading to a lower rate of staff turnover. Widespread accessibility to advanced technology over the last couple of decades has helped to ensure that remote working is feasible for both staff members and the companies they work for. Cloud storage has made the organization and sharing of files across vast distances both practical. There has also been a rise in tools designed to encourage virtual collaboration. From project management platforms that can be updated in real-time to video conferencing applications making meetings possible no matter the physical location of attendees. Over the last couple of decades, there has been a greater emphasis on employee welfare. With good reason; mentally healthy, happy employees have a huge impact on overall productivity. Ensuring the workplace is optimized to reduce stress is a vital tool in reducing turnover and improving workflow. By consulting with employees on organizational changes, intelligently investing in decor, and adopting remote working, companies can make a significant difference to their success trajectory. Starting a Career in Pharmacy in the UK - CareerMetis.com

Starting a Career in Pharmacy in the UK Source : UnSplash.comThe stereotype of a pharmacist is thus: a person who stands behind a counter and dispenses medicine according to the instructions scribbled across the patient’s prescription-slip.While technically accurate, this definition ignores the expertise and diligence this profession requires.By becoming a pharmacist, you’ll play an important role in determining patient outcomes â€" and you’ll be a member of the UK’s third-largest medical profession, behind doctors and nurses. So how do you get there? What does a pharmacist do?Most pharmacists work in high-street stores, though a minority operates from within medical practices. They’re qualified not only to read slips and hand out paper bags filled with drugs but also to offer advice to customers. As such, they take the strain off GPs, who would otherwise have to deal with an avalanche of common questions that could be easily dealt with across the pharmacy counter. The storage and disposal of medicine must follow st rict procedures and guidelines, and thus pharmacists have far greater responsibilities than the average shelf-stacker. On top of this, they’ll also need to provide training to new workers in the practical elements of the job. What skills do I need to become a pharmacist? Not everyone is suited to a career in a pharmacy. Given that there’s so much study involved, it’s worth sitting back and considering whether you’re a good match for the profession before proceeding. You’ll need:NumeracyYou’ll need to be numerate, with a logical and analytical disposition.Organization SkillsBeing able to multitask and organize your time effectively is crucial in a pharmacy â€" particularly one that’s temporarily short-staffed. You’ll need to be able to do this while still retaining your composure.Communication SkillsWhile you’re not expected to maintain the same bedside manner as a doctor or nurse, as a pharmacist you’ll need to take on board what people are saying to you and questi on them while still being polite. This isn’t always straightforward, and some customers will require a different approach than others.Contrary to popular belief, being a ‘people person’ is something you can learn â€" but you’ll need to do it outside of the lecture hall. As such, work experience in a retail environment, perhaps alongside your studies, will provide a wealth of useful training. What qualifications do I need to become a pharmacist? In the UK, practicing pharmacists must have completed a master’s degree in the subject at an approved school. This is a four-year full-time course (though it can be divided into chunks, as we’ll get to). You’ll be able to track down a suitable school via the NHS’scareers site.Degree in hand, you’ll need to become accredited with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), a body whose role is to keep a database of practicing pharmacists in the UK. You’ll complete a year’s worth of on-site training before registering, after which you’ll submit a ‘fitness to practice’ declaration. This declaration is re-submitted yearly, and can be revoked by the GPhC, should they decide that the pharmacist in question is no longer fit to practice. How do I obtain my degree?Though different universities will stipulate different entry requirements, generally speaking applicants will need A levels at A or B, including one in chemistry, plug another in biology, physics or maths.During the course, you’ll learn about the underlying science, as well as how a practice is actually run. Among the most essential skills, you’ll learn will be how doses are calculated and prepared. This is where numeracy becomes especially important. You can either go straight into four years of university or opt for a five-year ‘sandwich’ course which incorporates a year of work experience. If you’re unsure whether the course is for you, or you’ve missed out on a place, then you can always opt for a two-year foundation degree, from which you can ‘top-up’ to the full qualification. What else can I do with my degree?Once you’ve picked up your master’s, you’ll have several career options ahead of you. You could work in primary care in the NHS, preventing people from becoming ill rather than treating them afterward. You might also work on the RD side of things, helping pharmaceutical companies to develop and manufacture new drugs. If you’re looking for greater variety, you might even pursue a role in academia â€" which you’re free to combine with more traditional pharmaceutical work.Is it easy to find work as a pharmacist? One of the biggest appeals of this sort of career is that the demand for the work is high; nearly nine-tenths of all graduates find employment within six months of registering. The majority of the work on offer is in local or hospital pharmacies, with just a minority of graduates going on to work in industrial settings. These aren’t the only places in need of pharmacists, however: ca reers in the military, veterinary medicine, and care homes are all available. Is being a pharmacist rewarding? If you’re the kind of person who can glean satisfaction from helping others and preventing suffering, then a career in medicine is sure to appeal. Pharmacists tend to enjoy more sociable hours than doctors and nurses, and thus the job is considered less demanding.Hospital pharmacists might occasionally find themselves on call, but for high-street ones, the hours are broadly similar to other retail careers, with a rota in place for weekend work. As such, you’ll be able to help others without suffering from poor sleep.Being a local pharmacist, you’ll become a part of the local community. Provide returning customers with good service, and they’ll learn to trust you and eventually come to you for advice. If you’re the sort of person who would find that rewarding, then you’ll surely draw immense satisfaction from a career in a pharmacy. How much do pharmacists earn?Of co urse, money is a big motivator for many of us. Newly-qualified pharmacists can expect to pick up anywhere between £25,000 and £35,000. Privately-run pharmacies will offer different salaries to NHS ones. You can earn more as you gain experience and pick up specialist training; some senior pharmacists are on six figures.Forging a career in pharmacy requires considerable intelligence and perseverance. It’s not for everyone. With that said, those that do persevere often find the work tremendously rewarding â€" and the financial incentives aren’t bad, either!

Dial C for comfortable - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Dial C for comfortable - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog I somehow stumbled upon the website of George Sheehan, a doctor who played a vital part in the fitness and running boom in the 70s. The site has a lot of his essays, one of which is about comfort: In preaching the gospel of fitness, I emphasize the word comfortable. Whatever the activity it should be done comfortably. Most people believe the opposite. To be of any value, exercise should be uncomfortable. People are quite sure their exertions should involve, if not pain, at least some discomfort. Yes! I teach aerobics at a couple of local gyms in my spare time, and this is exactly my approach: That exercise should be comfortable and fun. It can be strenuoues, but not so much that you dont want to do it again tomorrow. If your chosen form of exercise is too hard or boring whats going to motivate you to keep going over a longer period of time? This echoes a previous post about not doing stuff you dont enjoy. Now, Im going to do a radical shift here and claim that this notion of comfort is important not only in physical exercise, but for any change process as well. Lots of people have a similar notion that change must be difficult, but I actually think that often the primary impediment to change is our own notion that change is hard. I believe, that it is absolutely possible to design major change projects so that they are mostly comfortable. I dont think they can be comfortable for all of the people all of the time, but neither does it need to be a difficult time for all involved parties. Not only that, but Im convinced that the only change processes that stand a chance of succeding, are those approached in this manner with the idea that the process itself should be mostly comfortable and fun.
